... and convincing ourselves this is true when it's really not. This approach is like putting our head in the sand, which gives a false sense of security yet accomplishes nothing. You see, ignorance is not bliss and we don't know what we don't know. There is just too much at stake to ignore the issue. People rely on us. If we're not engaged in a proactive approach to better self-care, then we're essentially treading water in a raging river.

Just Pushing Through It

We know something is wrong, yet we continue doing our normal routines, thinking it will get better in time. We fool ourselves into believing if we could just hold our breath long enough, the waters will recede. The problem is when storms stop, and the water recedes, we believe we were successful, when in fact, it was just the end of the storm. We did nothing to affect the storm. We did not become more resilient. So when the next rain shower comes, and it will, it won't take as much water to overtake us. If we're living in the hope of riding out every storm, while doing nothing different, we will eventually find ourselves underwater.

Trying To Control Everything

For some of us, it's like the dam is breaking and we need every finger and toe to plug all the holes because we're afraid the entire levee is about to break loose. When the pressure starts to build we use insufficient substitutions. These unhealthy strategies, such as alcohol, television, or even pseudo-healthy ways such as excessive exercise, or pouring ourselves into our career can all have the same outcome: distraction and disconnection. We do all this believing it is helping when in actuality, we're neglecting ourselves. No matter how we try to plug the holes, if it's not holistic, we'll never be able to stop the breaking of the dam.

Those issues we just described? Yeah, that was us. We have been there. Over 15 years ago we found ourselves drowning in the deep end as our marriage was going under. Spoiler alert, we made it through and self-care was foundational for us.
